If we expect our rotary engines to deliver top performance year after year for many years to come, it is clearly evident that extra lubricant must be added to the fuel. Especially with today's fuels blended with ethanol, it’s basically alcohol, great for cleaning but with rotary engines it cleans away the minute oil film injected by the metering pump, this leaves critical surfaces void of lubricant and unprotected.
Pettit’s Protek-R Fuel Lubricant was developed as a fuel premix for rotary engines. Protek-R is added to the fuel tank and delivered with the fuel to all critical surfaces in the engine. Adding Protek-R to your fuel has many benefits, the following are just a few:

This is why: the oil metering system is responsible for lubricating the delicate apex seals, compression seals, and housing surfaces that are common to every rotary engine. Oil is fed from the engine oiling system (oil-pan) to a variable ratio-metering pump. Then it’s injected into the engine where it partially blends with the onrushing air-fuel charge. This incomplete blending and fuel-to-oil ratios of 400:1*and higher are cause for alarm. Also, unleaded fuels typically have additives designed to clean piston engines, then high combustion temperatures of the rotary together with Ethanol blended fuels cause the minute film to disperse and /or vaporize leaving all your critical surfaces clean and dry without protection. This causes increased friction and wear, resulting in decreased performance and longevity. With over 25 years experience and more than 2000 rotary engines built, we know excessive wear on apex and compression seals as well as critical housing surfaces is caused from inadequate lubrication as well as the ethanol being added in today’s fuels. What’s all this mean? Without extra lubrication being added in the fuel, friction and heat will cause accelerated
wear and likely result in premature failure of some expensive engine parts, great for Mazda’s profits but not good for you and me.

Here at Pettit Racing we know how fun and important it is to have a good running rotary engine and keep it running for many miles and years, that is why Protek-R was developed in the first place: to help keep your engine fresh. For RX8 owners, some Renesis engines have weak or low compression.** Mazda says “heat generated friction” is the cause, but since factory recalibration for the RX-8 ECU increases injected oil for the high revving Renesis, could they just need some Protek-R to help cut friction and reduce wear? We think so and that’s what Protek-R does best.
RECOMMENDED PREMIX RATION FOR ROTARY ENGINES
Protek-R for piston engines
- For track use and spirited driving we mix Protek-R at a ratio of 100:1, or approx 1 gal fuel with 1 oz. of Protek-R.
- For hwy & cruising our minimum recommendation is 200:1 or approx 1 gal fuel with 1/2 oz. of Protek-R.
- Adding Protek-R at 200:1 improves the fuel-to-oil ratio by more than 100%, or 180:1 and better. Cut Friction. Gain Power. Use Protek-R.
Within 15-20 minutes of adding Protek in the gasoline of piston engine vehicles, there is typically a 3-5 MPG gain, nearly everyone after the first use with piston power, commented “Its the best MPG ever displayed and my vehicle feels smoother and seems to run better! A good many folks disagree. Adding lubricant to the fuel, how could that help?? Think about this, it’s not unusual for diesel engines to run a million miles, but gas piston engines never even do half that, both use nearly the same parts and materials but diesels have 3 times more compression, more stress and loads etc. so why is it they last the longest…………diesel fuel is oil!! There is no doubt using fuel
lube in gas piston engines will more than double the longevity.
RECOMMENDED PREMIX RATION FOR PISTON ENGINES:
On piston engine vehicles, we use a half an ounce per gallon which equals a ratio of 200:1. Nearly everyone that’s tried it gained 3-5 MPG within 15-20 min of use on both old and new cars.
For example: A piston engine in SUV used to get 17 MPG, after adding Protek-R it gets 20MPG, a 3 MPG gain. Using at a ratio of 200:1 or 1/2oz / gallon of fuel means 1 gal or (128oz)of Protek treats 256 gallons of fuel, even just 3 extra mpg = 256 x 3 =768 extra miles.
768 extra mpg / 20 mpg
= 38.4 extra gallons,
at $2.50 / gallon = a fuel savings of $96 or more results from every gallon of Protek-R consumed.
Immediate benefits are fuel savings which are typically double Protek-R’s cost, the long term benefits are adding 30 to 50% to the engines life expectancy.
Many customers have commented, they use a quart motor oil bottle that has a translucent stripe down the side showing the graduations in ounces/liters. You are able to see the measurements and makes it easy to use.
What if I put in too much?: You really never have to worry of putting in too much lubricant most air-cooled 2-stroke engines use a 50:1 ratio, Two ounces per gallon.
